Lower power ignition coil for Jacob's Ladder

For the Jacob's Ladder project described in 2013, would using a generic 12V automotive coil and not a Commodore VN coil, result in orange sparks not moving up the wires but staying at the bottom where the clips attach to the coil? (J. E., via email).
