Kirsty Adams reports on the operation which won the Return on Investment SHD Logistics Award earlier this year - Widdop Bingham - following the implementation of Proteus Software's RF Directed WMS System, which has improved productivity by 10%. Celebrations are a big part of our lives... and forgetting them can spark running for said lives. Me, you and the rest of society have a year to prepare for birthdays and anniversaries. However, according to Chris Illingworth - operations director at Widdop Bingham (WB), importer and distributor of giftware and home accessories - consumers are leaving their purchases later and later. Despite the 365-day window, they buy their gifts today and want them tomorrow. A champagne glass with '21' engraved on it, George Lucas goods, and 'Best Dad' mugs are all displayed in Widdop Bingham's impressive showroom, which I experienced on my visit to its 110,000 sq ft distribution centre in Oldham earlier this year to discuss why his company (which he owner-manages alongside his two brothers) won the Return on Investment Award. It was good to see what WB's customers see at the front-end, but I was there to see what was happening at the back-end. What was visible to me during my visit was stock accuracy. All stock movements and warehouse processes are controlled by the Proteus WMS. The Proteus WMS project at WB went live in December 2013, a project kick-started by Chris's son James and led by Tony Pearson, technical director at Proteus.
