Video formats:why bother?

Jim Rowe is a braver man than I,in attempting to explain the reasons behind all those different video input configurations(August 2004),to even reasonably technically"fluent"electronics enthusiasts.I've given up trying to explain how and why you use the"16x9 scan"facility on TV sets with standard 4:3 tubes,in conjunction with the"16x9 output"facility on DVD players and digital set-top boxes!And nobody seems to have any idea what I'm talking about when I try to demonstrate the differences between Composite,Component and Y-C video.Even I have trouble telling the difference sometimes!
