History of Directional Drilling

Apart from drills accidentally deviating from the vertical (or possibly deliberately deviating from the vertical to steal someone else's oil!) one of the first legitimate applications of directional drilling was to relieve pressure on a well that was undergoing and uncontrollable fire in Texas. A slanted well was drilled into which water was pumped which extinguished the fire at the wild well. This saved the oil field.
