Estimated payback period for a solar installation

Some comments regarding the economics of solar power in response to a number of letters in the August 2015 edition. In the "early days", with large government subsidies it was an easy argument for a 5kW system to pay for itself within 4-5 years. The imperative then was to feed as much back into the grid as possible. Now, with very low subsidies, the imperative is to use your own generated electricity as much as possible to gain the effective value of what the electricity company would be charging.
