Peroxynitrite (PN) is a reactive nitrogen species (RNS) that is linked to numerous inflammation-mediated disease states, from atherosclerosis to malignancy.~([1-4]) Endogenously, its precursors superoxide (O_2~(·-)) and nitric oxide (NO) are generated from independent sources and combine in a radical-terminating reaction to produce PN at a near diffusion-controlled rate.~([3]) Unfortunately, this RNS readily isomerizes and decomposes, thereby complicating its chemical synthesis when it is to be used in experimental systems. The most widely employed synthesis method, established by Beckman and coworkers,~([5]) requires the preparation of a stock alkaline solution (pH 13) of PN, denoted "authentic" PN. This stock solution is then added as a bolus addition to biochemical and cellular assays alike.
