PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF CASHEW APPLE PROCESSING- AN OVERVIEW

Cashew had a long history as a useful tree and had attained the status of an important tropical crop in the recent past. Commercial interest of cashew is for the production and utilization of cashew nuts. The cashew apple, formed by the swollen pedicel is another important produce. Yield of cashew apple in six to eight times that of the cashew nut. The production of cashew apple in India is estimated as 0.6 to 0.7 millon tons per annum (Sobhana and pushpalatha, 2014). This natural resource is totally wasted in the country, expect in Goa where it is commercially exploited for production of feni.
