Equality Discrepancy Between Women in Same-SexRelationships: The Mediating Role of Attachmentin Relationship Satisfaction

This interne study explored the mediating effectsof anxious and avoidant attachment on the link betweenrelationship equality discrepancy and relationship satisfac-tion among 75 cohabitating U.S. and Canadian women'ssame-sex couples. Multiple regression results indicated thatboth anxious and avoidant attachment were found tomediate the relationship between dyadic equality discrep-ancy and relationship satisfaction, suggesting that the morepartners perceived their relationships to be unequal, themore individual partners' fears and discomforts about theirrelationships increased, and in turn, anxious and avoidantattachment was associated with reduced relationship satis-faction. Results reinforced the importance of equalitywithin women's same-sex relationships; clinical implica-tions are discussed in light of the connection betweenequality and attachment for adult sexual minority women.
