The Family Life and Adjustment of Hmong American Sonsand Daughters

We examined gender differences in intergenera-tional family conflict and its associations with psycholog-ical and academic adjustment using a United States sampleof 121 Hmong American first-year college students.Hmong women and men reported similar levels of familyconflict. Family conflict was related to psychologicaldistress, above and beyond neuroticism. Gender moderatedthe relationship between family conflict and substanceusage and academic performance. For Hmong collegemen, higher family conflict was associated with lower ratesof smoking and higher rates of completing the first year ofcollege. For Hmong college women, higher family conflictwas associated with greater likelihood of alcohol consump-tion in their lifetime.
