Gordon Bamford Preston

GORDON BAMFORD PRESTON was born in Workington in the North-West of England on 28 April 1925, and spent his childhood mostly in Carlisle. He won an open scholarship to Magdalen College, University of Oxford in 1943, but his studies there were interupted, and at the tail end of the Second World War he briefly joined the famous but until recently highly secret galaxy of mathematical talent at Bletchley Park. His own brief account of that period appears in [2, page 17], where he mentions playing Go with ALAN TURING and David REES. Returning to Oxford in 1946, he graduated with first class honours in mathematics in 1948, and became an assistant mathematics master at Westminster School in London.
