An Anniversary -150 Years of Oil Transport by Sea

The 19th November 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the first cargo of oil shipped by sea. When the three-masted barque Elizabeth Watts sailed on the evening tide from Philadelphia, its cargo of oil started an epic voyage for the tanker industry. 150 years later 8,980 tankers of 441.4m dwt transport 57m bpd of oil which is even more crucial to the world economy than it is to shipping.
