The women of Dioro, Mali, nave declared war on their husbands over a market garden: not only have they taken their battle to court but, while awaiting a verdict, they've adopted the tactics of the wives of ancient Athens in Aristophanes' comedy Lysistrata, depriving their menfolk of the "pleasures of the conjugal bed." This modern African version of the battle between the sexes began in 1986 when the village on the banks of the Niger River, 300 km from the capital, formed a ton-a local development association. The ton made contact with the U.S. nongovernmental organization Africare for funding, which agreed in principle to help the village by providing funds to establish a large community market garden.
