During the UNCTAD XI Conference* in June 2004, it was reemphasized that access to finance for trade and working capital is crucial for the competitiveness of Small and Medium size Enterprises (SMEs). In developing countries, lack of adequate information on the financial condition and credit worthiness of SMEs is one of the principal obstacles to SMEs' obtaining adequate financing. For mis reason, many SMEs are forced to rely on self-financing or expensive informal financing. Emerging trade related e-finance and risk management techniques, including ICT-based solutions such as online credit information, credit insurance and e-payments, could contribute considerably to improving the situation.
