In this study, the efficiency of low-cost absorbent, namely, Cashew nut Shell Waste, the solid waste generated from Cashew nut Industries has been used as potential adsorbent. Raw cashew nut shell waste was pretreated with toluene to remove oil beforeits application. This low cost adsorbent was used for removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solution. The effects of system variables such as concentration/temperature, pH, contact time adsorbent dosage and particle size have been studied. A pH range of8-10 and a dose of 1 gram of adsorbent were required for 100% removal of cadmium with and without carbonization of it. The adsorbent capacity was also studied. The adsorbent capacity and the adsorbent intensity values showed that cashew nut shell waste,a non-conventional adsorbent is efficient in removing cadmium ions from aqueous solution. The adsorption data fitted well into Freundlich isotherm.
