In Germany, the cupola furnace is the most widely used melting unit for cast iron. Cupola furnaces may vary greatly as to design and size. There is one thing, however, that almost all cupolas have in common: They constitute the central iron melting unit in a foundry. This is why, in the event of fault, iron supply will fall short of demand in production, leading to production downtimes. A number of small, seemingly unimpressive measures as well as some major, constructional provisions will help increase plant availability significantly.
