Virtually all projectors sold for professional or consumer applications use HID lamps as a light source. The most common lamps are ultra-high pressure mercury lamps for most applications and xenon lamps for high-end applications. New light sources including lasers, LEDs and microwave-powered electrodeless lamps are challenging the dominance of HID lamps. This paper highlights the advantages and limitations of projection light sources, including example applications.
