A study on the effect of seaweed concentrate (SWC) on the photosynthetic pigments and biochemical constituents of Dolichus biflorus grown under heavy metal stress was carried out. The data revealed that SWC obtained from Caulerpa scalpelliformis, Ulvalactuca, Padina pavonia, Sargassum tenerrimum and Stoechospermum marginatum increased the amount of chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid, protein, soluble sugar and aminoacid. Cu and Pb at lOOppm (EC50) without SWC interfered with the production of phytosynthetic pigments and biochemical constituents. When Cu and Pb were administrated along with SWC, the inhibitory effect was reduced, irrespective of the mode of application. Peroxidase activity was more in Cu and Pb stressed plants than SWCand SWC+Cu/Pb treated plants. The bioremediative role of SWC could be attributed to the lowered peroxidase activity and increased amount of carotenoid pigment. Among all the seaweeds Padina pavonia is seemed to be a befitting species in mitigating Cu andPb induced stress, which can be used as a bio-resource for eco-friendly soil reclamation.
