Life-history of Gracilaria corticata J. Ag. (Gracilariaceae, Rhodophyta) in vitro

Unialgal cultures of Gracilaria corticata J. Ag. were established from carpospores and tetraspores released by_plants collected from nature, under the laboratory culture room condition (20+-2 deg C; 12-12 h L:D photoperiod and 25-30 #mu#E m~(-1)s~(-1) irradiance). Cultured plants raised from tetraspores resulted into gametophytes either giving rise to spermatangial or cystocarpic phases in approximately 1:1 ratio. Carpospore raised plants developed tetraspores after about six months of culture period. Mature tetraspores were liberated and developed into alternative gametophytic phases resulting into either spermatangial or cystocarpic plants, thus completing "Polysiphonia - type" of life history, where tetrasporophyte is alternating with morphologically identical gametophytic phase.
