Optical Properties of a Polycrystalline Spinel Ceramic-by Akihito Fujii, Kenichiro Shibata, Akira Yamakawa, Yoshinobu Takeda, Shigeru Nakayama and Tetsuo Kishimoto-Sumitomo Electric has developed a polycrystalline spinel ceramic for opticalapplications. The new material provides high transmittance within the visible to mid-infrared range and good mechanical properties. A powder consolidation process using HIP (Hot Isostatic Press) has enabled the production of large-size products(20×300×10mm) with excellent optical and mechanical properties. The material's high quality has been achived by controlling the grain size and A1{sub}2O{sub}3/MgO composition. It is able to perform as a durable optical window at high temperatures (500℃ or higher) and/or high humidity, and represents an economical substitute for sapphire.
