In recent years, in view of maximizing the utilization of existing equipment and the smaller size of new manholes, there has been an increasing need for cables and joints that are more compact than conventional XLPE cables and joints. Sumitomo Electric has been engaged in the development of new joints (self-pressurized joint; SPJ) for use as intermediate joints in XLPE cables. These SPJs are more compact and easier to install and include joints for 66-kV to 132-kV XLPE cables and for 154-kV to 275-kV XLPE cables. The 1300 SPJs have already been put into commercial lines. In this report we describe the structure, features, design concept, performance and commercial application of SPJ.
