Optical Cable for Offices Featuring Improved Installation and Removal by Kazuo lakehara,Yukihiko Nishi, Katsumi Miyazawa, Hisashi Tanji, Hiroshi M lyano and Shuzo Suzuki As the numberof fibers that optical cables contain have increased, the optical cables used to connect transmissionequipment have become concentrated around the cable termination frame where they are centrallyconnected. This has made it necessary to improve the efficiency of housing these cables in racks, etc.It is difficult to remove a particular cable that is no longer required from among a number of cablesconverging for connection since the cables may be tangled and stuck together, with the redundantcables adding further to the confusion. To resolve this problem, we decreased the diameter andweight of the cable (6.5-mm outside diameter, 45 g/m) by employing a narrow 1.7-mm diametersingle cord within a two-core optical cable, and studied the outer sheath structure in order to make thecable easier to remove. We used a flame-retardant polyethylene as the outer sheath material, andcreated a series of arcs in the cross-sectional shape of the outer sheath. This reduced the pulling forcein a simulated pulling test to less than half that of a round cable of the same material and diameter, andto approximately one-fifth that of a round cable with an 11-mm diameter and a PVC sheath, whichtogether represent a significant improvement in the force needed to pull the cable.
