The application of colostomy to the treatment of acute diverticulitis and to rectal cancer has decreased with time. A review of contributions that have brought about this trend is presented. The role of colostomy in the surgical management of acute diverticulitis and rectal cancer has evolved markedly over time. Common to both is a relentless drive to prevent the need for a permanent abdominal colostomy. This article will focus on advances that have led to changes in surgical management that allows some patients to maintain the normal route of defecation.
