Is there a role for dialysis in patients with hepatorenal syndrome who are not liver transplant candidates?

It is an oft stated and widely accepted truism among nephrologists that no one dies from acute kidney injury (AKI) anymore. While the causal versus association relationship between AKI and long-term CKD/ESRD/mortality remains under hot debate, it is certainly true that the vast majority of hospitalized patients die with AKI rather than of it. The physiologic derangements caused by AKI have, of course, become no less severe over time and the average hospitalized patient has become only older and more comorbid.
