Rural Housing Land Consolidation in the Hilly Area of Chongqing: A Rural Household Perspective

Consolidation of rural housing land has been focused on by officials and scholars with the development of rural economy However, little attention has been paid to the impacts of rural household's willingness on using rural housing. In this paper we took Banan District in Chongqing as a case and explored the impacts of the rural households' willingness on their moving to the central village and aborting original houses using Logistic Regression Models. The results show that households' willingness to move to central village was significantly influenced by housing materials, distance from the town, the proportion of non-agricultural income, and the preference to housing type. The willingness to abort original houses was mainly impacted by topography of housing site, construction cost, area of homestead, family size, educated level, understanding about ownership of the homestead and attitude to "a single family with more than one house." Therefore, the government should induce farmers to move to central village and abort original houses through preferential policies and economic incentives.
