A Status Update Agent for Cross Layered Approach to Increase Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Networks

Object tracking is one of the critical applications in WSN. Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) is an object tracking sensor used widely in the WSN, where it measures the infrared light radiating from the moving object and transmits the sensed information to the sink node. Since the PIR is equipped with a limited battery power, an energy efficient routing should be essential for the PIR based WSN to improve the network lifetime. This paper proposes a cross layer approach based on, a status update agent to optimize the energy consumption of the PIR sensor nodes by considering the joint optimal design of the Network Layer and Medium Access Control (MAC) parameters. The agent shares the MAC layer information like residual energy, the transmission power of the nodes to the Network layer to perform efficient routing. Furthermore, the redundant data transmission in an object tracking based sensor network has been eliminated to save the energy wastage. The simulation result of the proposed approach improves a better performance in the network lifetime and achieves a significant network performance in terms of delay, arrival rate, transmission power and packet delivery ratio.
