Status of the U.S.Academic Fleet

Larry Atkinson,my predecessor as chair of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory Systems(UNOLS)Fleet Improvement Committee,reported to Sea Technology magazine in a June 2003 editorial about federal plans for the renewal of the Academic Fleet.In the last two years,many developments have occurred.Some of the news is good;some of it is not.Today,planning for fleet renewal continues and is still evolving,albeit at an amazing rate.
