Australia Establishes Record Marine Reserve

Australia has designated an enormous, 65,000-square-kilometer marine reserve around an uninhabited island groups near the Antarctic Circle. At that size, the Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI) Marine Reserve becomes the world's largest no-take area, supassing another Australian marine reserve, Macquarie Island, which covers an area of about 58,000 square kilometers. The Australian territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands lies in a remote area between Australia and South Africa in the southern Indian Ocean.
