Review&Forecast Sea Grant: New National Priorities and a Plan for Success

Last year, we updated Sea Technology readers on the National Sea Grant College Program's (NSGCP) regional planning efforts and on our forthcoming national strategic plan. In response to the regional research planning efforts called for in President George W. Bush's Ocean Action Plan, the NSGCP initiated planning efforts in eight National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regions (Alaska, Pacific Northwest and Southwest, Insular Pacific, Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic and Gulf of Maine) in 2006, with an additional three regions (Mid-Atlantic, Greater New York Bight and Caribbean) added in fiscal year 2008. Plans for the first eight regions, developed with a broad array of state and federal partners, nongovernmental organizations and other stakeholders, will be completed this year. Additional funding will be provided to support implementation of the plans.
