In September 2004,a Hellenic Army Chinook helicopter crashed into the North Aegean Sea,near the Athos peninsula.Among the 17 people onboard were the Greek Patriarch of Alexandria(Egypt)and his colleagues.The Greek government ordered the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research(HCMR),through the Ministry of Development,to execute a search and a recovery operation.First priority was the localization of the helicopter's wreck and recovery of the passengers.Within 48 hours of its notification of the tragic event,HCMR undertook the search for the crashed helicopter,found the accident site and was thereafter able to recover the bodies of the victims.
