The Natioal Science Foundation's National Visiting Committee met in February in Monterey, California to review for the fifth year the activities of the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center (MATE), one of 13 NSF-funded national centers. It focuses on the development of stadardized curricula for the training and qualification of marine technicians throughout the U.S.Since the commencement of the project in late 1997, the center has made tremendous progress toward a sustainable and far reaching program that should contribute significnalty to the clarification of the definition of marine technician, a multi-faceted profession with aobut as may variation as there are among scientists and engineers.
