On the Irish Sead in Barrow-in-Furness, on the northwest coast of England, 220 miles from key decision-makers in the London-based U.K. Ministry of Defence (MOD), an extraordinary deviation from traditional Royal Navy (RN) submarine procurement strategy has already begun to pay dividends. As a direct result of the col-laborative "whole-boat" systems approach taken by BAE Systems Marine and the U.S. connector maker SEACON Phoenix Inc. (Westerly, Rhode Island), the RN's Astute-class nuclear submarine program stads to realize cost savings and cost avoid-ance totaling millions of pounds ster-ling-while simultaneously minimizing the number of hull penetrations and optimizing total shipboard cabling.
