The San Antonio-class of ships (LPD 17) will undergo sea trials in 2004.This class will replace the LPD4,LSD 36,LST 1179 and LKA 113 families of ships.The habitability provisions are considered to be landmark:each berth will have 40 percent more storage space,the crew of 360 and the 720 embarked troops will be able to sit up in bunks to read and write,berthing spaces will have lounges nearby,berths will include individual lights and fans,and the ship will have a reverse osmosis system for making fresh water.
