It was confirmed that the application of an external electric field E = 1 kV/cm during quenching in silicone oil increases the hardenability of a 1.0 wt. percent C steel.The magnitude of the shift in the CT curve to longer times (or lower temperatures) by the field was determined.A possible explanation for the effect of the field on the hardenability is that a reduction in the vacancy concentration occurs at the charged surface, leading to an increased flux of quenched-in vacancies from the interior to the surface, thereby retarding their influence on the rate of pearlite formation.
