Mechanochemical processing of ZrCl_4 + MgO has been shown to result in the formation of a nanocrystalline powder consisting of ultrafine ZrO_2 particles and amorphous MgCl_2. Subsequent removal of the MgCl_2 phase by washing yielded ultrafine ZrO_2 powder. The degree of interparticle agglomeration was found to be significantly reduced by post-milling beat treatment and also by the use of alcohol wash solvents.
