Ballard Removes Oil-Leaking WWII Ship from River

Ballard Diving & Salvage (Seattle, Washington) removed in August the final section of a World War II Liberty ship, which had been weakened by scrapping activities and had released an estimated 70 gallons of oil into the Columbia River in January. By setting up a cofferdam containment and deconstructing the ship in the water, Ballard said its crew prevented more than 32,000 gallons of bunker oil from leaking into the river.
