The United States has extensive economic,environmental and security interests in the Earth's polar regions-in the Arctic specifically because of the state of Alaska and geopolitical relations with the other Arctic nations,and in the Antarctic because of a number of international agreements,such as the 1961 Antarctic Treaty.
