The U.S. Navy said it will choose between two littoral combat ship (LCS) designs in fiscal year (FY) 2010: a semi-planing monohull designed and built by a Lockheed Martin (Bethesda, Maryland) industry team and an aluminum trimaran designed and built by a team led by General Dynamics (Falls Church, Virginia). Both configurations meet Navy operational requirements, the service said. Of the planned 55-ship program, LCS 1 is commissioned, LCS 2 is undergoing sea trials, and construction has started on LCS 3 and LCS 4, the Navy said.
