Construction Begins on Fourth U.S.Navy T-AKE Ship

San Diego,California-based National Steel and Shipbuilding Co.(NASSCO)recently announced the start of construction on the fourth ship in the U.S.Navy's T-AKE program.The ship will be named later this year and is part of the Lewis and Clark-class of combat logistics force ships.The 689-foot T-AKEs are designed to carry nearly 7,000 metric tons of dry cargo and ammunition,in addition to 23,500 barrels of cargo fuel.Sally Smith,spouse of Jeff Smith,ship design manager and technical authority for the U.S.Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command,cut the ship's first steel plate to signify the start of construction.
