In situ SEM studies of grain boundary migration during recrystallization of cold-rolled nickel

The behavior of grain boundary migration during recrystallization of cold rolled nickel has been examined with in situ heating scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitative metallography. The conclusions from this work can be stated as follows: The curve of observed velocity vs. deformation ratio for a migrating boundary during recrystallization may be interpreted in terms of the solute drag theory of Cahn, Lucke and Stuwe. The shape of the velocity-deformation ratio curve deduced from those results agrees well with the shape of the theoretically predicted curve and allows us to extract the mean value of the mobility parameter for Ni at 728K: M=(7.25plus/minus0.4)x10 exp -14 m exp 4 s exp -1 J exp -1 . A rough estimation of the value of the interaction energy between sulfur atoms and a moving grain boundary in polycrystalline nickel was also deduced from our results (E sub 0 =-0.84plus/minus0.23 eV at exp -1 ). It was however pointed out that because of some of the hypothesis of the Cahn, Lucke and Stuwe model this value should be considered with care.
