In situ SEM studies of grain boundary migration during recrystallization of cold-rolled nickel.

The behavior of grain boundarymigration during recrystallization of cold rollednickel has been examined with in situ heatingscanning electron microscopy (SEM) andquantitative metallography. The conclusions fromthis work can be stated as follows: The curve ofobserved velocity vs. deformation ratio for amigrating boundary during recrystallization may beinterpreted in terms of the solute drag theory ofCahn, Lucke and Stuwe. The shape of the velocity-deformation ratio curve deduced from those resultsagrees well with the shape of the theoreticallypredicted curve and allows us to extract the meanvalue of the mobility parameter for Ni at 728K:M=(7.25plus/minus0.4)x10 exp -14 m exp 4 s exp -1J exp -1 . A rough estimation of the value of theinteraction energy between sulfur atoms and amoving grain boundary in polycrystalline nickelwas also deduced from our results (E sub 0 =-0.84plus/minus0.23 eV at exp -1 ). It was howeverpointed out that because of some of the hypothesisof the Cahn, Lucke and Stuwe model this value should be considered with care.
