Understanding adventitious presence

Genetic engineering and the commercialization of new varieties with genetically engineered traits (e.g. herbicide and insect tolerance) are adding new considerations for the seed industry around the world. Introduction of genetically engineered cropshas been controversial as regulatory uncertainties in some countries heighten the importance of purity in the now expanding identity preserved markets. Historically, seed certification has been about "fit for purpose" i.e. does the seed lot meet the needs of the producer and can the producer market the crop? With identity preserved markets expanding, new purity measurement techniques are being developed. It is the application of new measurement techniques in addition to existing varietal purity standards that is adding new considerations for the seed industry internationally.
