Wang et al. (S.C. Wang, M.J. Starink, N. Gao, X.G. Qiao, C. Xu, T.G. Langdon, Acta Mater. 56 (2008) 3800) proposed simple shear perpendicular to the die's intersection plane and non-octahedral slip to explain texture evolution in equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) of Al alloys. Their conclusions resulted from errors in the texture analysis and misconceptions about texture evolution. The textures in the middle region of the billets can be explained by considering simple shear on the intersection plane and octahedral slip. It is also shown that the initial texture effect is not negligible, and that characterization of the textures in the bottom region using ideal orientations associated with rolling or recrystallization is not appropriate.
