German flu vaccine shortages force rethink

The German agency with responsibility for vaccines, the Paul-Ehrlich Institut (PEI), has reported that only 22 million doses of seasonal flu vaccine will be ready in time to vaccinate high-risk patient groups and medical personnel in October, about half of the expected supply.The PEI blames the late start of the vaccination programme on production problems experienced by manufacturers earlier this year. The European vaccine manufacturers association reported in July that production problems would force vaccine deliveries to be staggered (Scrip No 3171, p 6).
