By 2004, only 50 percent of Voestalpine's sales will come from steelmaking, according to the latest unofficial in-house estimates. In the same week as the European Commission gave the go ahead for the biggest steel merger ever, Austria's Voestalpine has outlined more of its plants to expand into downstream activities and "make more out of steel" rather than making more steel.Finished steel product sales in 2000-2001 made up 2bn of the 3.2bn grout total, giving steel production a two thirds share of sales. The company expects that steel sales in 2004 will, by contrast, only make up half of total group sales.
