Efficacy of Melting Municipal Incinerator Fly Ash by A Mini-Mill EAF

In this work, feasibility of utilizing municipal incinerator fly ash (MIFA) as a substitute of raw materials for steelmaking in a mini-mill was studied. Also studied included the efficacy of this mode of melting treatment and recycling for MIFA. MIFA has been categorized as a hazardous waste by many countries including Taiwan. It was estimated that 400-600 metric tons of MIFA would be generated per day in Taiwan by 2008. Currently, most MIFAis solidified prior to monofilling. However, lack of new landfill sites would be a serious foreseeable problem for MIFA disposal. Therefore, MIFA was subjected to melting treatment at 1600 deg C in an electric arc furnace (EAF) of a domestic mini-mill. Results of the full-scale tests show that this innovative technology has many advantages. Of primary importance is that MIFA could be properly treated in a sense of recycling by existing mini-mills. Also, through this technology the quantity of quicklime required in steelmaking would be reduced and the qualities of steel billets and steel bars would not be deteriorated. Details of full-scale testing in this regard are given in this paper.
