Changes in seed quality and ABA content were monitored during seed development in two single-cross hybrids (cv. Zheda 2 and Zheda 3) of sponge gourd. Maximum seed dry weight occurred at 49 days after pollination (DAP) for Zheda 2 and 42 DAP for Zheda 3. Maximum seed quality (results of standard germination, cold and accelerated ageing tests) was acquired at 56 and 49 DAP for Zheda 2 and Zheda 3, respectively, seven days after t he attainment of maximum dry weight. However, the optimal harvest time for sponge gourd seeds was 56-63 DAP due to the high seed moisture content at 49 DAP which may lead to mechanical damage during processing. Melanin content in seed coats had a close relationship with seed germinability and can be used as a harvest indicator in sponge gourd seed production. ABA content was high at the early stages of development and declined in mature seeds. ABA content of dry seeds was significantly lower than that of fresh seeds before 49 DAP.
