Building regulations have an importantimpact on the economics of building construction. In the case of structuralsteelbuildings, changes to the Building Code of Australia have resulted in new possibilities for cost-effective construction. These changes have been influenced by fire research funded by BHP Steel onalong-termbasis. Key characteristics of this research are the business and customer focus, thepreparedness to getinvolvedwith specific projects, a flexible approach and the setting of both long and short-term objectives. This paper describes aspects of this research and the resulting benefits to BHP Steel.
