Effects of EMS drag on; recovery still years away

Shrimp prices in Thailand have continued to rise as a result of the early mortality syndrome (EMS) problems that have hit production in Southeast Asia. At the start of October, buyers were payingTHB 267 (EUR 6.29/$8.54) for 60 shrimp per kilo, while amonth previously they were paying THB 232 (EUR 5.47/$742), said Jim Gulkin, managing director of Siam Canadian. For 70 shrimp per kilo, prices had jumped from THB 221 (EUR 5-2l/$7.07) in September to THB 255 (EUR 6.oi/$8.i5) in October, while prices for 80 shrimp climbed from THB 208 (EUR 4-90/$6.65) to THB 243 (EUR 5-73/$7-77).
