Sometimes I wish I didn't care. In the 15 years I served as a firefighter and emergency medical technician, I built an impenetrable emotional shield that's an essential tool for any emergency responder. Burned houses and businesses, injured people, and dead babies were not my problem; they were my challenge. My mission then was to bring order to chaos. As the guy with the fire truck, it was my job to be the dispassionate professional. I miss those days.
