An Up-Down Year for Cans

You could say that 1995 was an up-and-down year for can recycling rates- up for steel cans, down for aluminum. The steel can recycling rate reached 55.9 percent in 1995, a 5.5-percent gain over 1994's 53-percent rate, according to the Steel Recycling Institute (Pittsburgh). In achieving that rate, the steel industry remelted more than 17.8 billion cans, or 1.5 million tons of steel. While the majority of this tonnage was food cans, last year saw an increasing number of empty aerosol and paint cans being recycled, the institute says.
